It is made of 100% cotton and, believe it or not, approximately 550 yards of 1 1/2 inch wide fabric strip that has been sewn and then double-folded by hand. This minimizes the raw edge you often see in these types of rugs, giving the work a much smoother appearance.
In this rug, the "field" section uses raw-edged strip to create a texture that contrasts with the smoothness of the rest of the rug.
